The picture above shows the most important piece of electrical equipment on a canal boat: the starter motor. This one is a very old one. It was built in or about 1967 by Lucas and fitted onto the Lister engine on my boat. There are dozens of different 'starters' depending on the age, make and even model of engine. To locate your starter in time and space, switch the ignition on and turn the key-start. The first noise you hear, before the engine roars into life, is your starter. Once the engine fires up, it whirls the alternator which in turn belts electricity back into the starter battery and and maybe and other batteries which may need charging. (see separate topic)
