In Pentargon's mess room is a drawer holding wires and bits destined to 'wire the boat for sound'. Wifi and Bluetooth are at the centre of this project and "off-grid philosophy" is leading the methodology.
It remains an absolute rule that the boat should be able to function on UK inland waterways for ten days off-grid and in total isolation in any season and in any weather. Ability to communicate with the outside world is very important.
I have an off-grid wish list which focusses on all things electric and includes being able to listen to radio, access weather forecasts, receive podcasts, have usable light, charge mobile phones. I also need to be able to write and publish and access banks over the internet. As of 14th January 2023 I can actually do most of these things already. Reliability depends on boring stuff like cables and connectors. Having USB ports and a power supply to them all of which remain viable in 'hostile' or 'harsh' environments is a huge field.
Tracking back from the blue light on a USB takes us by devious routes back to the boat's batteries and onward to the solar panel on the roof. The contents of that drawer provides the assurance that the route is not broken ...
