The screw did his best to camouflage his movements by putting up all sorts of devious notices but the reality was that the last time he was seen on site was 18th April 2024.  Contractors had been engaged to replace windows on a number of flats which work had been an ongoing and contentious issue for years at Homenene. The contractors were eventually due to begin work 'in late April'.  The screw was unable to face the pressure of orchestrating the work and went sick over the weekend of 19th.  It subsequentially transpired that the penal colony was without a property manager for the next  five months.  We had a very nice lady covering the position on a part-time basis but she seems to have spent most of that five months trying to unravel the mess left in the office by the previous incumbent.  The inmates had been divided into those who thought the screw was the best thing since the sliced pan,  and those who knew he wasn't, and those who didn't care one way or the other.

This scribe's observation would be that the screw caused divisions and polarization within the centre by establishing a number of trusties who reported back to him on every vagary, real and imagined and setting them against other residents deemed by him to be trouble makers.

'trustie', in general,  is an inmate expected to do extra jobs and/or organize certain things (usually distastful to the screw) in return for privileges like extra time out, extra food, access to special supplies ...
