--MACERATION--
macerate:- v. "soften by soaking"
deriving from the Greek.
Archimedes of Syracuse was macerating
when he had that Eureka moment
without which we would never have
floated our boat
I'm well acquainted with 'maceration' .n.
Flahavan's Organic Oatflakes
macerate overnight to ensure
beautiful porridge in the morning.
Macerating trotters in warm water
with Epsom salts helps with
exfoliation and with clipping of nails.
We soak Marrowfats and Mung Beans
as we sail towards tomorrow's dinner.
"MACERATION"
IN A CANAL CONTEXT
IS A WHOLE NEW
BALL GAME
Wed.19th April 2017, 8.15am
Bridge 43a Coventry canal.
Overhead is Watling Street
with which we have remained
in occasional but ongoing contact
since leaving Dartford last October.
An excellent night's sleep had been had;
the sun was shining in a clear blue sky;
coffee had just been brewed.
Toast and boiled eggs were under way
... when nexdore's engine fired up ...
Nexdore had arrived, latish, last evening
in an immaculate 60' floating palace.
Lovely couple. Second day's hiring
of their first outing of this year.
They had backed off from the lock
and secured to rings behind Pentargon.
Deck-to-deck banter was convenient.
We chatted as I helped them secure.

"The boat is very new" ... they said
The bottom gates at Atherstone yawn
when the lock is empty and,
because the lock self-empties,
a boat going up in the morning
could rope directly into the lock.
The rope does all the work
... it's a single handed operation ...
Let some water down from a top paddle.
The gates close their selves ...
Stay closed while you pour more in.
If they wished to be away early, I said
they could be in and up in a flash.
Last night's last boat had come down,
fly-boating for Polesworth in the gloom,
so all five locks would be in favour.
They could do a clean sweep to the top
before anyone had even gotten up.

When I heard their engine fire up,
I reckoned ... [wrongly as you will see] ...
they were up for a crafty "fast away".
I popped out to greet them and offer
to lock-wheel them up the flight..
while they did brekky on the fly.
He sez "We're not in a hurry to get away!"
"But we do need to start the engine
to use the toilet". I'm incredulous.
This 'state of the art' canalboat
needs lecky
for which they must start up
to run the alternator
to generate the current
to charge their batteries
to supply the power
to run the "macerator"
to complete their toilets.

I left them to it and retreated to my innards to ponder this wonderful strangeness.
To perform a bowel evacuation on this brand new steel narrowboat, one had to be in possession of a workable voltage in the leisure circuit. I wonder what one might do, when such a boat develops an electrical glitch so that there is no leisure voltage.
Half of all boaty troubles are electrical.
My boat is a 1973 Springer,
with an onboard composting toilet.
When I want to shoot a log
I squat ... and pull the firing pin.
